Cornish cuisine, to eat when visiting Cornwall when on holiday. That's right in this article I will be going into what to eat and drink when in Cornwall. Of course we will be going into pasties also wine and meats. You can't say 'pasty' and not think of Cornwall, so where is it originate from and what are the best ingredients?
Now no-body really knows the true origins of the pasty however traces of the tasty snack have been flagged up through time. It is even dated back to the middle ages where Henry VIII used to enjoy a pasty here and there. Cornish pasties can have many ingredients however traditionally made pasties can include beef, swede, potato and onion. Another point in time pasties have been found to have been associated with is the mining period of Cornwall. Although now a days we have our pasties filled with the traditional mix it seems back then there pasties were half traditional whilst the other had a sweet filling such as jam or fruit. It seems that once you were done with your main meal you could have a pudding. Pasties can have many different fillings from different fruits and veg, meats and cheeses. The key to a good pasty is the crimping at the edge. You must crimp as it seals in all the juices etc from the ingredients making it taste that extra bit nicer. Cornwall will always be famous for its pasties. All over the country and the world in fact Cornish pasties can be found in most in most bakery windows. So moving from pasties we're now having a look at fish.
With the option to either go course fishing or sea fishing there is always a lot of great tasting fish to be caught. From course fishing you can catch some beautiful salmon and trout. The south west offers some real quality salmon and produces some of the best in England. Plenty of stock in the sea beaches around Cornwall can offer some great spots for sea fishing where available catches include cod, mackerel, dog fish and flat fish. There are tonnes of places to catch for example, Perranporth, Crooklets and Northcott Mouth, just a few spots where you can find the fish mentioned as well as turbot and plaice.. Please bare in mind that in the summer these beaches will be full of tourist more than likely so you have to find a good spot away from them, alternatley go at another time in the year. Now my favourite, wine.
I know what you're thinking, wine? from the south west? That's right there are a few wineries darted all around Cornwall and the west country. You may have heard of
Camel valley wine which really is tasty Rose, white and red can be found all over and Cornish wine is well known for its quality. So when coming down for some Cornish cottage holidays give the local cuisine a try and enjoy what Cornwall has to offer.
